Their latest gold has pushed them ahead of the USA, which closely follows with 38 golds but boasts a higher overall medal count of 122, as compared to China's total count of 90.
Australia remains in third place with 18 gold medals, continuing their strong performance in swimming and other sports. Japan holds the fourth position with 18 golds and overall tally of 43. India's position in the Paris Olympics 2024 medal tally, however, has seen a drop, falling to the 71st spot. India ends Paris Olympics 2024 campaign with five bronze and a silver
India's performance at the Paris Olympics 2024 was marked by moments of both excitement and disappointment, ending in a total of six medals—one silver and five bronze. It was one less than their Tokyo Olympics 2020 tally where they ended with seven.
With the nation sending its largest-ever contingent of 117 athletes to Paris Olympics 2024, there were high hopes of surpassing previous achievements, but the final tally fell just short of expectations.
India's journey kicked off on a strong note with shooter Manu Bhaker securing a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event. She didn't stop there, partnering with Sarabjot Singh to clinch another bronze in the mixed team 10m air pistol event, making history as the first Indian to win multiple medals in a single Olympic edition since independence.
This early success was further boosted by Swapnil Kusale, who added a bronze in the men’s 50m rifle three positions, marking a solid comeback for Indian shooting after struggles in previous Games.
However, the excitement waned as India faced a tough medal drought, and the pressure was on for the remaining events. The Indian men’s hockey team delivered a crucial bronze by defeating Spain, achieving back-to-back Olympic podium finishes for the first time in over five decades.
The spotlight was on Neeraj Chopra in the javelin final, where he secured a silver medal, narrowly missing gold to Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem. This silver brought India’s medal count to five, with the final medal in Olympics 2024 coming from 21-year-old Aman Sehrawat in the men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling, making him the youngest Indian to win a medal at the Games.
