India falls short of replicating Tokyo 2020 tally at Paris Olympics 2024
India's journey at the Paris Olympics 2024 ended with a total of six medals—one silver and five bronze—just shy of the seven medals the country achieved at the Tokyo Olympics.
With a record 117 athletes representing India in Paris, expectations were high for the nation to surpass its previous Olympic achievements. However, despite some standout performances, the overall medal count fell slightly short.
The Paris Olympics 2024 campaign began on a high note with Manu Bhaker winning the bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event. Bhaker didn't stop there, teaming up with Sarabjot Singh to secure another bronze in the mixed team 10m air pistol, making her the first Indian athlete to win multiple medals at a single Olympic Games since independence.
Another bronze came from Swapnil Kusale in the men’s 50m rifle three positions, signalling a strong showing from the Indian shooting team after recent struggles at previous Olympic Games.
The men’s hockey team claimed a bronze medal after a hard-fought victory against Spain, achieving consecutive Olympic podium finishes for the first time in more than fifty years.
Neeraj Chopra secured the silver medal in javelin throw, finishing just behind Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem. This silver brought India’s tally to five, and the final medal came from 21-year-old Aman Sehrawat in the men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling, making him the youngest Indian to medal at these Games.
