Paris Olympics 2024 Shooting: Manu Bhaker qualifies for 25m pistol finals; Esha Singh eliminated
India’s shooting sensation Manu Bhaker continued her incredible journey at the Paris Olympics 2024 after securing a berth in the women’s 25m pistol final. She is now on the lookout for an unprecedented third medal at this year’s summer games.
Manu Bhaker scored 590-24x to finish second in the 25m pistol qualification round, which means that she will compete in the final at the Chateauroux shooting range on Saturday, along with the other top eight shooters from the qualification round.
Manu Bhaker managed to score 590 points, which involved 24 inner 10s. However, she fell behind Hungarian shooter Veronika Major, who scored 592 – a new Olympic Qualification record – which included 27 inner tens.
If Manu Bhaker manages to secure a podium finish in the 25m pistol event, she will become the first Indian athlete to win three Olympic medals in a single edition of the quadrennial tournament. She will also become the most successful Indian individual athlete in Olympic history.
22-year-old Manu Bhaker has become a national hero after winning two bronze medals at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics. She first won a medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event before adding another in the 10m air pistol mixed team event alongside her partner Sarabjot Singh.
Esha Singh, the other Indian shooter involved in the 25m pistol event besides Manu Bhaker, would be disappointed with her performance as she could only manage the 18th spot after scoring 581 in the qualification round.
Despite being just 19 years old, Esha was a hot prospect in the Indian shooting contingent as she had previously won two gold medals in the 2023 ISSF World Shooting Championships, one gold and three silver medals in the 2022 Asian Games, as well as multiple gold medals in the Junior World Championships.
However, Esha will end her debut Olympic empty-handed as of now, while Manu Bhaker will look to write history on Saturday.
