Paris Olympics silver medallist shuttler He Bing Jiao retires from international badminton
Chinese shuttler He Bing Jiao, who recently secured the silver medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 in the women’s singles event, has announced her retirement from international badminton. However, she will continue playing in domestic competitions.
She was part of the Paris Olympics 2024 final in the women’s singles event. Unfortunately, she suffered a defeat to the top seed An Se Youn of South Korea to settle for second place, marking it as her career’s biggest achievement.
He Bing Jiao stole the headlines when she ended as the runner-up at the BWF World Junior Championships in 2014 after losing to Akane Yamaguchi of Japan. However, she reversed her fortunes at the Youth Olympic Games in 2014, defeating the same opponent in the final to secure the gold medal.
After the conclusion of the Rio Olympics in 2016, He Bing Jiao rose to prominence alongside Che Yu Fei after the retirements of top shuttlers from China like Wang Yihan, Wang Shixian and Li Xuerui.
He Bing Jiao’s medals and achievements
In 2016, He Bing Jiao stole the limelight after winning the Japan Open 2016 over her compatriot Sun Yu and the French Open in the same year against Beiwen Zhang.
The southpaw won titles at the BWF World Tour, including the Denmark Open and the French Open in 2022, defeating Chen Yu Fei and Carolina Marin, respectively. She was also part of the Chinese team that won titles in the Sudirman Cup and Uber Cup.
Additionally, she won the bronze medals at the World Championships in 2018 and 2021. At the 2023 Asian Games, she secured a bronze medal in the women's singles. At the Asian Championships, she secured a silver medal in 2019 and bronze medals in 2017 and 2024, respectively.
In the Uber Cup, He Bing Jiao propelled the Chinese women's team to gold medal wins in 2020 and 2024. She also helped the team to bag a silver medal in 2022 and a bronze medal in 2018.
At the Paris Olympics 2024, her act of holding a Spanish pin on the medal podium as a tribute to Carolina Marin, who had retired hurt with injury in the semi-final clash, won the hearts of fans worldwide.
