Paris Paralympics 2024 Para-Athletics: Dilip Gavit finishes last in men’s 400m T47 final
Indian para-sprinter Dilip Gavit suffered a heartbreaking result on Saturday as he finished last in the final round of the Paris Paralympics 2024 para-athletics men’s 400m T47 event.
Gavit finished the event at the iconic Stade de France stadium in eighth place with a timing of 49.99s, thus ending his debut appearance at the Paralympic Games without a medal.
The para-athlete from Nashik, Maharashtra, started the race in a strong manner but slowed down near the 150m. Gavit fell behind and could not recover, ultimately finishing dead last in the final round.
The result will not be easy to digest for Dilip Gavit, who, despite his young age, was considered a dark horse among the Paris Paralympics 2024 para-athletics contingent as he won a gold medal in the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China.
However, still only aged 21 years, Dilip Gavit will take his experience in Saturday’s event as a learning experience and will hope to bounce back stronger at the upcoming Los Angeles Paralympics 2028.
Meanwhile, two Moroccans took the top two positions on the podium on Saturday. Aymane El Haddaoui won the gold medal with a new world record timing of 46.65s, breaking his own previous record of 46.67s. Paralympic Games record-holder Ayoub Sadni clinched the silver medal with a timing of 47.16s.
The bronze medal was taken by the Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Thomaz Ruan De Moraes of Brazil, who registered a timing of 47.97s in the Paris Paralympics 2024 para-athletics men’s 400m T47 final on Saturday.
