Paris Paralympics 2024 Para-Athletics: Simran Sharma qualifies for women’s 200m T12 final

Indian para-sprinter Simran Sharma qualified for the final round of the Paris Paralympics 2024 para-athletics women’s 200m T12 event after finishing on top in the semi-final round on Friday.

24-year-old Simran Sharma topped the semi-final 3, registering a timing of 25.03s. As a result of topping her semi-final group, Simran automatically qualified for the final round.

Simran, who also represented India at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020, finished ahead of Germany’s Katrin Mueller-Rottgardt and Italy’s Valentina Petrillo, both of whom turned in their season’s best performances of 25.15s and 25.92s respectively.

Meanwhile, Russian para-athlete Anna Kulinich-Sorokina, competing under the Neutral Paralympics flag, failed to finish the event after she was disqualified due to a false start.

The other para-athletes to qualify for the Paris Paralympics 2024 para-athletics women’s 200m T12 final are Cuba’s Omara Durand Elias (24.41s), Venezuela’s Alejandra Paola Perez Lopez (24.59s), and Iran’s Hajar Safarzadeh Ghahderijani (25.06s).

Simran Sharma will need to be at her very best if she wants to win India’s seventh gold medal at the ongoing Paris Paralympics 2024, as she will be up against heavyweights such as Durand Elias of Cuba, who is the current world record holder in her category.

The Paris Paralympics 2024 para-athletics women’s 200m T12 final will take place on Saturday, September 7, from 11:04 pm IST onwards.
