PT Usha meets Vinesh Phogat after heartbreaking disqualification from Paris Olympics 2024
The legendary PT Usha met Vinesh Phogat after the latter was disqualified from Paris Olympics 2024. Vinesh was hard done by after she was not allowed to take part in the gold-medal bout of the women’s 50kg category event against Sarah Hildebrant of the USA. Instead, Yusneylys Guzman of Cuba has replaced her for the summit clash.
It has been learned that Vinesh was around 100 grams overweight than what was needed to be eligible for a berth in the grand finale. Subsequently, she was left out of the final bout, which also meant that Vinesh has to leave empty-handed from all three editions of the Olympics that she has taken part in.
Following her disqualification on Wednesday (August 7), PT Usha, one of the legends of Indian athletics, met Vinesh. Usha also happens to be the chief of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). She was seen consoling the Indian wrestler, who was lying on bed. The picture of their meeting went viral on social media platforms.
Vinesh Phogat returns without a medal
After taking down Japan’s Yui Susaki, who won gold in Tokyo, and Oksana Livach from Ukraine, Vinesh found herself one win short of securing a medal in the Paris Olympics. She upped her game and got the better of Cuba’s Guzman in dominating manner.
On the verge of winning gold, Vinesh now has to return without a medal. Just when it seemed that after the heartbreaks in Rio and Tokyo, she would script history, luck did not favor her as she weighed 100 grams more than the permissible limit.
She also went out of contention to win a medal for India in the ongoing quadrennial event as per the laws of the United World Wrestling (UWW). It now remains to seen whether Vinesh returns to take part in the Los Angeles Olympics to be held in 2028.
