“Utterly unjust and deeply unfair” - Netizens shocked as Lakshya Sen’s points ‘deleted’ despite a win in the opening game of the Paris 2024 Olympics
India’s Lakshya Sen faced a massive setback at the Paris 2024 Olympics as the points he earned for beating Kevin Cordon in the opening match on Saturday were removed after the latter withdrew due to injury.
Fans reacted with shock and bewilderment as the news broke through and took to social media to question the validity of the move by the Paris 2024 Olympics authorities.
“‘As per BWF General Competition Regulations’, una it is bewildering how such inequitable rules are created and approved,” one fan wrote on X. “This situation is utterly unjust and deeply unfair to Lakshya Sen.”
“What a useless rule and why it always has to be against the Top Indian athletes?” another fan questioned.
“HOW IS THIS FAIR ON LAKSHYA SEN?” another comment read.
Other fans bemoaned the bad luck of the Indian badminton player, as he lost out on a crucial point as his opponent withdrew from the Olympic Games due to injury.
“This is how ‘bad luck’ looks like,” one fan wrote.
Another wrote, “Talk about luck. Lakshya Sen being the defending champion couldn’t participate in Canada Open because he wasn’t able to receive Visa and now yesterday when he won his Olympics game game against Cordon, latter has withdrawn from d Olympics and now Sen has to win both his games.”
Lakshya Sen to start from scratch at Paris 2024 Olympics after first victory declared void
After Kevin Cordon withdrew from the Paris Olympic Games due to an elbow injury, Group L was reduced to a three-person group. To avoid having an uneven number of matches played, Sen’s opening-day win against Cordon was declared null and void.
After being back to square one, Sen will need to win the next two matches as the competition in Group L will increase. He will face Julien Carraggi of Belgium on Monday. On Wednesday, July 31, Sen will face the reigning All England Open champion and World No. 3 Jonatan Christie in a crucial match that might decide the fate of the group.
