Vinesh Phogat Disqualified: How much was Vinesh Phogat overweight ahead of women's 50kg final at Paris Olympics?

Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the women's 50kg final at the Paris Olympics 2024 for being overweight by 100 grams. It happened during the weight check on Wednesday morning (August 7).

"It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning," a statement from the IOA read.

Vinesh's exit comes as a heartbreak for the country as fans eagerly anticipated India's first gold medal at the Paris Olympics 2024.

The 29-year-old was around two kg overweight last night (August 6) and despite all efforts, she failed to meet the weight criteria of 50kg during the weight check ahead of her final bout on Wednesday.

According to the competition rules, wrestlers have to get their weight check done on both days of the event. Vinesh passed the weight check on Tuesday morning ahead of her previous bouts.

However, failing her weight check on Wednesday morning resulted in her disqualification from the women's 50kg category final at the Paris Olympics 2024. Vinesh Phogat will also lose out on the well-deserved medal and return home empty-handed, despite putting up a show in her previous three bouts.

Vinesh Phogat became the first Indian female wrestler to qualify for the final

On Tuesday night, Vinesh Phogat became the first female wrestler from India to qualify for a gold medal match in the Olympics. She was guaranteed a medal last night and was just one victory away from bringing glory to the country.

However, with Vinesh disqualified, Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzmán who lost in the semis to the Indian wrestler will compete against USA's Sarah Hildebrandt in the gold medal match.
