[Watch] Avinash Sable scripts new 3000m steeplechase national record in Paris Diamond League 2024
India’s 3000m steeplechaser Avinash Sable continues to steal the limelight as he scripted history with yet another new national record at the Paris Diamond League 2024 on Sunday, July 7 at the Stade Sébastien Charléty in Paris, France.
Moving into the details, Avinash clocked 8:09.91 seconds to finish at the sixth rank in the men's 3000m steeplechase event. Ethiopia's 22-year-old athlete Abrham Sime won the gold medal with his personal best of 8:02.36 seconds.
Kenya's Amos Serem and Abraham Kibiwott bagged silver and bronze medals, clocking 8:02.36s and 8:06.70 seconds.
With just three weeks to go for the Paris Olympics 2024, this new timing would give Avinash a boost of confidence to go all guns blazing. Known for breaking records, he would be eyeing to add another personal best and end on the podium at Paris 2024.
Statistically speaking, this is the 10th time he has created a new national record in the 3000m men’s steeplechase event.
Notably, Avinash Sable secured the Paris Olympics 2024 quota after meeting the qualifying standard (8:15.00 seconds) at the Diamond League series in Silesia, Poland in 2023, clocking 8:11.63 seconds.
Avinash Sable created the previous national record at Commonwealth Games 2022
Though he missed out on the Asian Games in 2018 due to an ankle injury, Avinash Sable made a strong comeback in the National Open Championships to break the 37-year-old national record held by Gopal Saini of 8:30.88 seconds, clocking 8:29.80 seconds.
Later in 2019, he created yet another national record at the Federation Cup in March 2019, clocking 8:28.94 seconds. After his exceptional performances, he made the cut for the Asian Athletics Championships and World Athletics Championships in 2019.
Avinash created another national record in the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, clocking 8:11.20 seconds (silver medal). It’s worth noting that this was the first time an athlete from outside Kenya bagged a medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the CWG since 1994.
In another achievement, Avinash Sable clinched a gold medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China in 2023 and also secured a silver medal in the 5000m event.
