[WATCH] Harmanpreet Singh nets his 6th goal at Paris Olympics 2024; leads India to a historic win over Australia
Indian men’s hockey team skipper Harmanpreet Singh continued his exceptional form to net his sixth goal of the Paris Olympics 2024. With this goal, Harmanpreet became the second-highest goal scorer so far in men’s hockey at the Paris Olympics.
He is just behind Blake Govers of Australia, who has seven goals to his name. The Indian skipper has been brilliant at Paris 2024, especially when it comes to set pieces. Three of his goals have come in penalty corners, whereas three in penalty strokes.
Olympic Khel, the official India handle for the Olympic Games, posted a video of Harmanpreet’s penalty stroke against Australia that helped India win the game 3-2.
“Harmanpreet Singh extends his fine run of form! 🔥 The 🇮🇳 captain nets his 6️⃣th goal at #Paris2024!” the post read.
Harmanpreet Singh leads India to a win over Australia in Olympics after 52 years
Indian men’s hockey team’s 3-2 victory over Australia helped India seal the second spot in the Pool B points table. They have also qualified for the quarter-finals of the mega event.
However, this win over the mighty Aussies was special for one more reason. It ended India’s 52-year drought of defeating Australia at the Olympics. The last time came way back in the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.
It was also India’s first victory against them this year and would have been a huge confidence boost after losing to Belgium in the previous game. Before this, India’s last win against Australia came more than a year ago, in March 2023.
Alongside the captain’s penalty stroke, Abhishek also netted two goals whereas PR Sreejesh lived to his name of “The Wall” by making some important saves that helped India mark this historic win.
India are now three wins away from a medal and would have be at their absolute best to make that happen.
