Harmanpreet Singh scores brace against Ireland to state Indian hockey team’s medal ambitions

Harmanpreet Singh, the Indian men’s hockey team’s talismanic captain, has led the team from the forefront in this year’s summer Olympic games. After scoring two goals in the opening two games against New Zealand and Argentina, the 28-year-old defender took his tally to four after scoring a brace against Ireland, ranked 11th in the FIH World Ranking.

After the penalty stroke in the 11th minute, Harmanpreet struck in the second quarter after scoring from a penalty corner. With four goals in three games now, Harmanpreet has become the highest goal-scorer in the men’s hockey event at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

However, despite the positive performance of the captain, a concern remains about the lack of field goals for India. All four of Harmanpreet’s goals have come from either penalty corners or penalty strokes, and this can prove to be a problem as India is scheduled to face stronger teams like Belgium and Australia in their next Pool B matches.

India, currently at the top of Pool B albeit playing a game more, will face off against Belgium in its next group game on August 1 from 1:30 pm IST.
