[Watch] Indian boxing squad trains hard in practice session ahead of Paris Olympics 2024
The Indian boxing squad is raring to go at the Paris Olympics 2024. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandviya, the Indian pugilists can be seen putting in the hard yards.
The said clip is from one of the training sessions of the boxing team in Paris.
“I am thrilled to see these intense visuals coming from the heart of the Olympic Games Village in Paris.Our Indian Boxing squad is showcasing their strength and relentless spirit. They’re here to win, and they're ready to punch their way to glory!” Mansukh Mandviya wrote in his post on X.
The Indian boxing squad consists of six pugilists and packs plenty of strength and skill to put up a good show. With four female and two male boxers, the Indian squad boasts of two world champions in Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain. Nishant Dev, Amit Panghal, Preeti Pawar and Jaismine Lamboria complete the squad.
With a good mix of youth and experience, the Indian boxing team is expected to win a medal or two for India in Paris.
Indian boxing squad to compete in six of the 13 weight categories at Paris Olympics
Boxing has 13 weight categories at the Olympic Games in Paris. Seven out of the 13 categories are for men and the remaining six are for women. For India, Nikhat, Preeti, Jaismine and Lovlina will be competing in the women's 50kg, 54kg, 57kg and 75 kg weight categories respectively.
For the men, while Amit Panghal will be participating in the 51kg category, Nishant Dev will feature in 71kg. The boxing events are scheduled to start with the preliminary rounds on July 27 at the iconic Roland Garros Stadium and the North Paris Arena.
So far, India have won three Olympic medals in boxing, all bronze. Boxers Vijendra Singh (Beijing 2008), Mary Kom (London 2012) and Lovlina Borgohain in Tokyo 2020 have finished on the podium for India.
