[WATCH] Vinesh Phogat going towards her village in Haryana post Paris Olympics

Although she was disqualified from the final of the women's 50kg freestyle wrestling at the Paris Olympics 2024, Vinesh Phogat received a warm welcome on her way to her native village in Charkhi Dadri in Haryana.

Phogat, who has been at the top level for the last decade, had gained more than two kilograms a night before the final and took all measures to reduce her weight. She didn't sleep, didn't eat or drink water, spent time in the sauna treatment and tried skipping, cycling and jogging to cut down the extra weight.

However, on the morning of the final, she was found 100 grams overweight and was disqualified.

Vinesh Phogat missed out on medal at Paris Olympics 2024

Vinesh Phogat was slated to take on USA's Sarah Hildebrandt in the final at the Paris Games. Hildebrandt actually, went on to win the final and took the gold medal.

Phogat was considered a favorite for this clash as she had previously defeated the USA counterpart. However, being disqualified meant she wasn't in contention to win a medal. Ahead of being disqualified, she had guaranteed a silver medal for herself, which would have been India's second silver at the quadrennial event as Neeraj Chopra achieved the same feat a day later.

Vinesh Phogat had appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for a shared silver medal and had also announced her retirement, a decision she might change in the coming days.

The CAS took their time and ultimately dismissed her plea on August 14, three days after the conclusion of the Paris Olympics. However, it was just a single-line order rather than a detailed one, as per Indian Olympic Association advocate Vidushpat Singhania.
