Who is Aman Sehrawat? All you need to know about the Indian wrestler competing at Paris Olympics 2024
Aman Sehrawat is one of the members of the Indian wrestling contingent that will be taking part in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. Hailing from Haryana, Sehrawat has taken giant strides in his career. He grabbed the limelight in 2019 after winning the gold medal at the Asian Cadet Championship in Nur-Sultan.
In 2023, Sehrawat won the gold medal at the Asian Championships in Astana. He defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Almaz Smanbekov 9-4 in the final to finish atop the podium. Last year, he also won the bronze medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou.
In the 57kg event, he won the bronze medal at the Lin’an Sports and Culture Centre. Japan’s Toshihiro Hasegawa and Han Chong-song of North Korea won the gold and silver medals, respectively.
Sehrawat also won five medals in the Grand Prix (two gold, two silver, and one bronze) in Almaty, Zagreb, Tunisia, Budapest, and Zagreb. He also won medals in the Asian and World Cadet Championships.
How did Aman Sehrawat qualify for the Paris Olympics 2024?
Aman Sehrawat made his way through the quadrennial event while taking part in the World Wrestling Olympic Qualifiers in Istanbul, Turkiye, back in May. He booked a ticket to Paris after beating Chongsong Han of Korea 12-2 in the semi-finals. He is the only Indian male wrestler in the Olympics 2024.
The 21-year-old will join fellow Indian wrestlers Anshu Malik (women’s 57kg), Vinesh Phogat (women’s 50kg), Reetika Hooda (women’s 78 kg), Antim Panghal (women’s 53kg category), and Nisha (women’s 68kg) in Paris.
India have won six medals in wrestling at the Olympics. Sushil Kumar is the only wrestler to have won multiple medals in the showpiece event with bronze in Beijing (2008) and silver in London (2012). Sehrawat will now look to make his way into the elite list of Indian wrestlers.
