Who is Anshu Malik? All you need to know about the Indian wrestler competing at Paris Olympics 2024
Anshu Malik is one of the six Indian wrestlers to take part in the Paris Olympics 2024. She will participate in the women’s 57kg category event at the quadrennial event. She came through the ranks after competing in the Asian Junior Championships and World Junior Wrestling Championships.
In 2021, Malik took a major step in her career after she won the silver medal at the World Championships in Oslo. The youngster lost to USA’s Helen Maroulis in the final and had to stay content with a second-place finish. Malik has trained under Japanese wrestler Akari Fujinami to prepare for the Olympics.
With her triumph, she also became the first Indian female wrestler to win silver at the World Championships. In 2022, Malik, born in the Jind district of Haryana, won the silver medal in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Malik also bagged four medals (one gold, one silver, and two bronze) in the Asian Championships.
How did Anshu Malik qualify for the Paris Olympics 2024?
Anshu Malik booked her ticket to Paris during the Asian Olympic Games Qualifier in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, earlier this year. Malik got the better of Kalmira Bilimbek Kyzy of Kyrgyzstan, beating her 12-1. Thereafter, she qualified for the Olympics after defeating Laylokhon Sobirova 11-0 in the first period of the semis.
Back in June, Anshu’s Olympic dreams came under the clouds after she sustained a shoulder injury while training. As a precautionary measure, she stopped training to not aggravate his injury. Later, she was cleared of any major injury after undergoing an MRI scan.
Anshu is among the five female wrestlers from India in the Olympics along with Vinesh Phogat, Nisha, Ritika Hooda, and Antim Panghal. Aman Sehrawat is the only male wrestler in the national team for Paris 2024.
