Who is Ban Hyojin? All you need to know about the South Korean shooter who broke the Olympic Qualification Record at Paris 2024 Olympics
The young rifle shooting sensation from South Korea, Ban Hyojin, is currently riding high on confidence. At only 16 years of age, the shooter broke the Olympic Qualification Record at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Ban scored 634.5 to qualify for the women’s 10m air rifle event.
Ban Hyojin was aged thirteen and was only a few weeks into starting in the sport when the shooting competitions at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics were underway. Hailing from Daegu in South Korea, Hyojin has come a long way.
Her story is even more special as she had only participated at the Olympic trials with an intention to gain experience. Having no such goal of making it to the Summer Games in Paris, all Ban wanted was to compete against some veterans of the game and push for a national team spot.
However, to her surprise, an Olympic spot came to forefront. Hyojin found herself leading after three out of the first five rounds of the trials. An unfathomable Olympics qualification became a reality for the athlete who only started the sport in middle school.
Ban Hyojin’s Olympic Qualification Record at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics
Ban Hyojin registered scores of 106.2, 105.7, 104.8, 106.6 , 105.9 and 105.3 in the six rounds of the women’s 10m air rifle qualification round. With a total of 634.5 points, Hyojin topped the standings.
By doing so, the young star also broke the all-time record of 632.9 in the women’s 10m air rifle. The record was previously set by Norwegian Jeanette Hegg Duestad at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In fact Jeanette also managed to break her own record from Tokyo by scoring 633.2 and coming second behind Ban.
Switzerland’s Audrey Gogniat scored 633.6 to come third in the qualification round. All shooters, including Ban Hyojin, who have qualified will now be competing at the women's 10m air rifle finals in Paris.
