One of India's most promising para-athletes, Dilip Gavit will compete in the men’s 400m T46/47 category at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Hailing from Toran Dongari, a small village near Nashik, Maharashtra, Gavit has overcome significant challenges to stand on the world stage, and his journey is nothing short of inspiring.

With his right arm amputated from below the elbow, Gavit's early life was marked by hardship, but his love for running never wavered. He first caught the eye of national coach Vaijnath Kale during a local meet in Nashik, and from that moment on, his life took a turn toward serious athletics.

A deeper look at Dilip Gavit's career

Dilip Gavit’s breakthrough came at the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China, where he won a gold medal in the 400m event. This victory was particularly special as it brought India its 100th medal in the history of the Asian Para Games. His success in Hangzhou set the stage for his qualification for the Paris 2024 Paralympics, where he aims to continue his winning streak.

Before making his mark internationally, Gavit had already shown his potential at the national level. In 2019, he was part of Maharashtra's 4x400m relay team at the Khelo India Youth Games in Pune.

Despite his disability, Dilip Gavit ran alongside able-bodied athletes, leading his team to a bronze medal. His participation was a significant achievement, demonstrating his ability to compete at the highest level despite the odds. Running with one functional arm, Gavit’s performance was nothing short of remarkable.

Training under coach Kale at VK Academy, Gavit has steadily improved his performance, clocking impressive times in national and international competitions. In 2023, he represented India at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris, securing a quota place for the Paralympics. His personal best is 49.67 seconds in the 400m.
