Who is Nisha Dahiya? All you need to know about the Indian wrestler competing at Paris Olympics 2024
Nisha Dahiya is part of the wrestling contingent for India at the Paris Olympics 2024 and will feature in the 68kg division. She grabbed the limelight after she won the bronze medal in the 65kg category event in the World Under-23 Championships in Belgrade in 2021.
Last year, Nisha took giant strides in her career after she won the silver medal at the Asian Championships in Astana. She had lost to Japan’s Ami Ishil, who bagged gold, in the semi-final.
Nisha has a challenging task ahead of her as Sakshi Malik remains the only female wrestler from India to have won a medal in the Olympics.
Last year, Nisha was bedridden for two months after she fractured her collarbone due to swelling around the neck. Then it took her two more months to get back to training. But the wrestler showed grit and determination to finally be a part of India’s wrestling contingent for the Paris Olympics.
How did Nisha Dahiya qualify for Paris Olympics 2024?
Nisha Dahiya booked her ticket to Paris during the World Olympic Qualifiers that took place in Istanbul, Turkiye in May. She secured her berth after beating Alexandra Anghel of Romania in the semi-final of the women’s 68kg semi-finals. She also earned India’s fifth female wrestling quota in the Olympics with her stupendous showing.
Nisha began the Qualifiers with a win over Alina Shauchuk, a teenager from Belarus, and advanced to the quarterfinals. Thereafter, she got the better of Adela Hanzlickova of the Czech Republic and made her way through to the semis. Nisha pinned Anghel and booked the flight to Paris.
Aman Sehrawat, Ritika Hooda, Antim Panghal, Vinesh Phogat, and Anshu Malik are the other Indian wrestlers at the quadrennial event in Paris. It is also the first time that five female wrestlers will be a part of an Olympic edition.
