Sandeep Singh is an Indian shooter competing in the men’s 10m air rifle event and is all set to make his debut at the Paris Olympics 2024. Singh’s journey from a cross-country athlete to a sharpshooter has been inspiring and remarkable.
Sandeep, originally from Punjab, served in the Indian army as a sepoy in the Sikh Light Infantry, starting in 2014, and was posted in Siachen. He began his shooting career after joining the army and during that time, he won a state championship and secured a bronze at the national level.
Sandeep faced a short-time doping ban while he was selected for India’s reserve team for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Following the incident, he was released from Army Marksmanship and was sent back to Siachen. Sandeep made his comeback when a senior officer saw his shooting skills and made him continue his passion.
The 28-year-old has been in excellent form and is performing well. He made his World Cup debut in 2023 in Rio de Janeiro, where he helped India secure fifth place in the mixed team 10m air rifle men's event with a recorded score of 629.1.
Sandeep also participated in the ISSF World Cups in Cairo, Granada, and Munich earlier this year. In the Asian Championships qualifier held in Jakarta this year, he recorded a score of 633.4 and finished ninth in the Men's 10m Air Rifle event.
How did Sandeep Singh qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics?
After a major setback in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Sandeep Singh is finally all set to make his Olympic debut at the Paris Olympics 2024. He showed dominant performance in the trials and secured himself the Paris Olympic quota.
His recorded scores were 634.4, 632.6, and 631.6 in the first three rounds. In the final round, his score dropped to 628.3, but the average was enough to secure him a ticket for the Paris Olympics 2024.
