Who is Shubhankar Sharma? All you need to know about the Indian golfer competing at the Paris Olympics 2024
Shubhankar Sharma is one of the four golfers from India, along with Aditi Ashok, Diksha Dagar, and Gaganjeet Bhullar, who has participated in the Paris Olympics 2024. In 2013, he started taking baby steps in the world of golf after turning professional. Thereafter, he took part in the Asian Development Tour in 2014.
In the same year, Shubhankar performed exceptionally in the Panasonic Open India where he claimed the fourth spot. Back in 2017, Shubhankar made inroads into his golf career after winning the Joburg Open by beating South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen.
Later, in 2018, Shubhankar won the Maybank Championship after beating Spain’s Jorge Campillo. He also won the Cochin Masters, PGTI Players Championship, Kolkata Classic, Tata Open, TAKE Open Golf Championship, and McLeod Russell Tour Championship.
Back in 2018, Shubhankar also won the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year and Asian Tour Order of Merit winner. The golfer follows a strict diet and never eats meat.
How did Shubhankar Sharma qualify for the Paris Olympics 2024?
Back in June, the International Golf Federation said in a press release that Shubhankar Sharma made the cut for the quadrennial event in Paris. Sharma, who was ranked World No. 219 back then, broke into the national contingent with an Olympic ranking of No. 48.
“It is a privilege and honour to represent India at the Olympics. It is a dream come true obviously. I have been preparing for this day for a while now, and am planning my schedule on the European tour accordingly,” Shubhankar was quoted as saying by the press release.
Along with Shubhankar Sharma, Gaganjeet Bhullar also found their place in the golf squads and will be making their debut in the Olympics. Aditi Ashok, on the other hand, is the most experienced of the four golfers, having also taken part in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
