Who is Sumit Nagal? All you need to know about the Indian tennis player competing in men's singles at Paris Olympics 2024
Sumit Nagal will be one of India’s medal contenders when he takes part in the Paris Olympics 2024 to be staged from July 26 to August 11. The 26-year-old has come up the ranks in the last one and a half years, giving India reasons to cheer for in tennis. From being ranked outside the top 500, Nagal recently attained his career-best ranking of No. 68 earlier in July.
Nagal started the year by making his way through to the second round of the Australian Open after taking down Alexander Bublik. Nagal had to play three matches in the qualifying round to secure a main-draw berth.
Later, he got a direct entry for the French Open and Wimbledon, although he could not progress to the second round in either.
Nagal also broke into the top 100 for the first time in his career after he won the Chennai Open. Back in April, Nagal gave the-then World No. 7 Holger Rune a run for his money after taking a set off him during the Monte Carlo Masters but ended up losing the match in three sets.
Sumit Nagal is one of the three Indian tennis players in the Paris Olympics along with Rohan Bopanna and N Sriram Balaji.
Who will Sumit Nagal face in the Paris Olympics?
Sumit Nagal has been handed a challenging draw for the Paris Olympics. In the first round, he will be up against Frenchman Corentin Moutet in the opening round. Nagal has a 1-0 head-to-head record over his French opponent, having beaten him in Marrakech earlier this year. But if he wins, he could potentially face World No. 6 Alex de Minaur.
Back in 1996 Atlanta, Leander Paes won the bronze medal in men's singles and is India’s only medalist in tennis at the Olympics. In the Tokyo 2020 Games, Nagal ended India’s 25-year wait of winning a singles match at the quadrennial event, but he crashed out after losing to Daniil Medvedev in the second round.
