Who is Yash Kumar? All you need to know about the Indian para-canoe athlete competing at the Paris 2024 Paralympics
As the only male player from India set to represent the country in para canoeing at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, Yash Kumar is determined to make history. Competing in the Men's Kayak Single 200m - KL1, Yash is driven by the dream of securing a gold medal for India at the Paralympics.
At just 26 years old, Yash has already made a significant impact in the world of para-sports. Born and raised in Agra, UP, Yash’s lower body was paralyzed due to polio at the age of one. Despite facing ridicule and doubt during his upbringing, he refused to let his disability define him.
Yash's journey in para canoeing began in 2019 when he travelled to Bhind, Madhya Pradesh, for training. In just three months, his dedication bore fruit as he qualified for the World Championship in Hungary, where he finished fifth among competitors from 36 countries. This impressive debut marked the start of a successful career.
A look at Yash Kumar's achievements
In 2020, Yash Kumar clinched both gold and silver medals at the National Championship, demonstrating his growing skill in the sport. Although the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his training and prevented him from winning gold at the 2021 Bhopal competition, he still secured a silver medal.
Yash's achievements continued to soar in 2024. He won a silver medal at the Asian Canoeing and Para Canoeing Sprint Championship in Tokyo, followed by gold and silver medals at the Para Championship in Bhopal. The victories have cemented his status as one of India's top para-athletes.
Despite his success, Yash's path has been fraught with challenges. He has faced resource shortages, including limited training facilities and financial constraints. Nonetheless, with steadfast support from his uncle, Durg Vijay Singh, and aunt, Gayatri Devi, Yash remains focused on his goal.
