"Why is CAS body acting like Indian courts?"- Fans lose patience as CAS's verdict for wrestler Vinesh Phogat gets postponed
The entire nation was awaiting for the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to announce its decision on Vinesh Phogat's appeal on Saturday (August 10). However, the wait has now been prolonged, with the decision being deferred to Sunday, August 11.
Vinesh and her team have made an appeal in front of the CAS to award the Indian wrestler with a joint silver medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. However, this delay in proceedings and a final decision has not been taken too well by the Indian supporters.
The wait seems too long for the fans as they want to gain closure on the entire fiasco as soon as possible. The netizens took to the social media platform X (Twitter) to express their displeasure with the constant delay.
"Why is CAS body acting like Indian courts?" commented a fan.
"Yeh toh wohi baat hogai TARIKH PAR TARIKH , TARIKH PAR TARIKH mili hai toh sirf TARIKH PR INSAAF NHI MILA," wrote a user.
"Aisa lagta hai ki CAS kewal taal raha hai," expressed a fan.
"Verdict delayed till tomorrow. What's so complicated about this case that it's taking this long to figure out? Are we looking at a potentially landmark case for #Olympics #Wrestling and sports law itself?" a user commented on X.
"Not saying we will win case 100%. But this means they pondering over it hard. That itself is a win for us as start, no one gave us chance. Else case wouldve closed swiftly," an optimistic fan wrote.
"Hum kar lenge intezaar. Tum toh bas medal do," expressed a user.
A decision regarding Vinesh Phogat's appeal to now be made by CAS on August 11
The Indian Olympics Association (IOA) issued a statement sharing details regarding the pending decision of Vinesh Phogat's appeal. It states that the decision will now be made at 6 PM IST on August 11.
As per some further reports, an IOA source has also indicated that the decision will be made public only on August 13.
"The ad hoc division of CAS has extended time till 6:00 p.m. on August 11, 2024, for the Sole Arbitrator Hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett in the Vinesh Phogat vs. United World Wrestling & the International Olympic Committee to issue a decision. The reasoned order will be issued at a later date," said IOA in a statement.
On August 9, the CAS hearing of the Indian wrestler's appeal lasted three hours with her legal representatives presenting her case in detail. Vinesh Phogat's and the nation's dream of a Paris Olympics 2024 medal is at present hanging by a thread.
