“You can't write a better script for Dangal 2!” - Netizens demand biopic on Vinesh Phogat as she enters Paris 2024 Olympics women’s 50kg finals
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has entered the finals of the women’s 50kg freestyle division event in the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics after she defeated Yusneylys Guzman of Cuba by 5-0 on Tuesday, August 6. With this victory, Phogat became the first female wrestler from India to enter the finals in any Olympic Games.
After her landmark victories in this year’s Summer Olympic Games, netizens have taken to social media to demand filmmakers make a sequel to the wrestling film ‘Dangal’ revolving around Vinesh’s story.
“Vinesh has been phenomenal! You can't write a better script for Dangal 2!” one fan posted on social media.
Dangal was a 2016 Bollywood film that revolved around the lives of wrestlers Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari – who are Vinesh’s elder sisters. The film featured Amit Khan in the lead role of Geeta and Babita’s father, and fans now want Dangal 2 for the younger Phogat sister.
One fan simply wrote, “Vinesh Phogat is writing the script for Dangal 2. 📃✍🏻🔥”
The demand for Dangal 2 came from all corners of the internet, with one fan writing:
“Dangal part 2 is live. Vinesh is surely bringing the gold 🥇 and the Indian flag is going to fly high. God is with you Vinesh. You have done well. Finish the fight.”
“Amir Khan can think of a sequel to Dangal now, Vinesh's story is worth a script,” another post read.
“Vinesh Phogat deserves a Dangal 2,” one person wrote. “Wrestling opponents on the field to bring glory to India. Wrestling with monsters off the field to bring accountability to India.”
“It's time for Aamir to make Dangal 2 with Vinesh Phogat as the main lead,” another fan posted on X.
Vinesh Phogat to go for gold against USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt in the Paris 2024 Olympics finals
Phogat will have the chance to write her name in Indian Olympic history if she manages to win the gold medal match on Wednesday in the women’s 50kg freestyle event finals against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the USA.
30-year-old Hildebrandt, a bronze medalist in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with a world rank of 6, will surely be the favorite in the final bout against Phogat. However, the Indian wrestler will back herself to win India’s first gold medal in wrestling as she has defeated far stronger opponents, including world No. 1 Yui Susaki, en route to the gold medal match.
Whatever the outcome of the final match on Wednesday, Vinesh Phogat has ensured a podium finish for herself, thus making her country immensely proud of her achievement.
