52 kg weight division World Champion boxer Wu Yu from China will be taking on India’s promising boxer Nikhat Zareen in the round of 16 bout at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Thursday, August 1.
Interestingly, Wu Yu secured her Paris Olympics 2024 quota after bagging the gold medal at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China. Additionally, she is one of the strong medal contenders in the weight division at the Paris Olympics 2024.
She started off her Asian Games campaign with a win over Korea’s Kang Su-Hyang by 5-0. Later, she defeated Uzbekistan's Sabina Bobokulova and Mongolia's Oyuntsetsegiin Yseugen by 5-0 apiece. In the final, she stunned Thailand's Raksat by 5-0 to bag the gold medal and ultimately the Paris 2024 quota.
The last time Wu Yu competed against an Indian was Sakshi Chaudhary at the World Championships 2023 in New Delhi, defeating the Indian by 5-0 in the semi-final.
Nikhat Zareen defeated Maxi Carina Cloetzer of Germany by 5-0 in the Round of 32 bout and looks confident to make it big in the Round of 16 encounter against a better-ranked boxer.
The Asian Games 2023 bronze medallist and two-time World Championships gold medallist boxer Nikhat Zareen bagged a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham after defeating Carly McNaul of Northern Ireland in the 48–50 kg category.
