Paris Olympics 2024: India's results on August 5 – Sable qualifies for final; Sen, Dahiya, and India's skeet shooters face heartbreaking defeats
Day 10 of the Paris Olympics 2024 was a day of mixed results for the Indian contingent, marked by memorable performances and crushing losses.
India's women’s table tennis team kicked off their campaign with a spectacular upset, defeating Romania's World No.4 team in an exciting pre-quarterfinal. Manika Batra put on a stellar performance, winning both her singles matches and playing a pivotal role in India's 3-2 win.
In athletics, Steeplechaser Avinash Sable finished 5th in his heat, securing a spot in the finals.
Indian wrestler Nisha Dahiya also delivered in her pre-quarterfinal, defeating Ukraine's Tetiana Sova. However, her campaign took an unfortunate turn in the quarterfinals against Pak Sol Gum. Leading 8-2, Dahiya suffered a severe right-hand injury midway through the bout. She continued to fight despite the setback. However, the injury allowed her opponent to mount a comeback and win the match, ending Dahiya's campaign at the Paris Olympics 2024.
In the Skeet Mixed Team event, shooters Anant Jeet Singh and Maheshwari Chauhan made history by becoming the first Indians to go past the qualifying rounds and make it to a bronze medal match at the Olympics. In a nail-biting contest for third place, the Indian duo narrowly lost to China with a score of 43-44.
India's shuttler Lakshya Sen also faced a heartbreaking result in his bronze medal match against Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia. Sen started brilliantly, winning the first game 21-13. However, Lee Zii Jia fought back to take the next two games 16-21, 11-21.
Irrespective of the final result, Sen's journey in the tournament was remarkable: and it also marked the first time an Indian men’s shuttler made it to the semifinals of the Olympics.
