Paris Olympics 2024: India's results on August 6 – Neeraj Chopra enters final, Vinesh Phogat to go for gold, men's hockey team will fight for bronze
Day 11 of the Paris Olympics 2024 was a day of highs and lows for the Indian contingent.
India’s "golden boy," Neeraj Chopra, was finally seen in action at the Paris Olympics 2024, participating in the javelin throw qualification event. The Olympic gold medalist needed just one throw to make it to the final, crossing the qualification mark on his first attempt with a massive throw of 89.34 m, his best of the season.
On the other hand, Kishore Jena's campaign came to a disappointing end. Jena managed an 18th-place finish overall, failing to advance to the finals.
Meanwhile, the Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat assured herself and India of at least a silver medal by advancing to the final of the women's freestyle 50 kg category. Phogat caused a major upset in her Round of 16 match, defeating Japan’s Yui Susaki, who had never lost a bout in an international competition.
Phogat's impressive run continued as she overcame Oksana Livach in the quarterfinals and Yusneylys Guzmán Lopez in the semifinals to enter the final, where she will compete for the gold.
The Indian men’s hockey team experienced a heartbreaking end to their semifinal clash against Germany. Despite putting on an incredible show, the team conceded a last-minute goal to go down in a narrow 3-2 defeat. They will now face Spain for the bronze medal on August 8.
India’s men’s table tennis team also faced a tough challenge against top-seeded China in the round of 16. Despite their best efforts, the Indian team couldn't prevail against the Chinese side to end their run at the Paris Olympics.
