Paris Olympics 2024: India's results on August 7 – Vinesh Phogat disqualified, appeal lodged, Mirabai Chanu finishes 4th
Day 12 of the Paris Olympics was a tough one for the Indian contingent, marked by several heartbreaking defeats. The most significant blow came in the form of Vinesh Phogat’s unfortunate disqualification on the morning of her gold medal match.
Vinesh Phogat, who had delivered an extraordinary performance in all her bouts on her way to the final, was assured of at least a silver medal. However, she was disqualified before her final match for being overweight by a mere 100 grams during the weigh-in.
This shocking turn of events left almost every Indian fan in disbelief. An appeal has been lodged, and we may see new developments tomorrow, but for now, the disappointment remains.
Adding to India’s woes, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu narrowly missed the podium, finishing in fourth place. The silver medalist from the Tokyo Olympics 2020 lifted a total of 199 kg, just one kilogram short of the bronze medalist from Thailand, who lifted 200 kg.
Indian wrestler Antim Phangal also faced a tough defeat against Turkey’s Zeynep Yetgil. Phangal was overpowered in her bout, losing 0-10. Despite her efforts, she couldn’t secure a win, adding to the string of losses for India.
The Indian women’s table tennis team saw their dream run come to an end in the quarterfinals. They were beaten by Germany 3-1. Despite the loss, the paddlers put on an incredible performance throughout the Paris Olympics 2024, showcasing their potential for a better performance next time around.
Almost all of India’s athletes in contention in the track and field events faced disappointing ends to their campaigns. Amid the disappointments, there was a glimmer of hope in golf. India’s Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar delivered commendable performances. Aditi Ashok currently sits in 13th place, while Diksha Dagar is in seventh place after the first round.
