Paris Olympics 2024: What is the qualification mark for athletics?
The clock is ticking for Indian athletes vying to secure their spots for the Paris Olympics 2024. With the qualification window for athletics closing soon on June 30, the upcoming 63rd National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships, scheduled from Thursday, June 27, to Sunday, June 30, represents the last opportunity for many to make the cut for the Summer Games.
Indian athletes will be putting everything on the line in this crucial tournament, and the pressure will be immense. The Paris Olympics 2024 will see a total of 1810 athletes (905 men and 905 women) compete across all the athletics events.
As per IOC guidelines, each National Olympic Committee (NOC) can have a maximum of three athletes per event and two teams for team events, with one relay team allowed per NOC for relay events.
Additionally, Universality Places are granted to NOCs without qualified athletes, enabling them to enter their highest-ranked male or female athlete in the 100m, 800m, or marathon event.
Athletes have two primary routes to secure their Olympic spots. First, by meeting the entry standard for an event within the qualification period, which constitutes 50% of the qualification spots. Second, by achieving a high position in the World Athletics Ranking during the ranking period, filling the remaining 50% of the spots.
While meeting the qualification mark directly is the safest and most straightforward path, strong performances that boost world rankings can also ensure a ticket to Paris.
The stakes have never been higher, and the entire nation will be watching as these athletes strive to represent India on the grandest stage of them all – the Paris Olympics 2024.
On that note, let’s take a look at the qualification mark for every athletics event at the Paris 2024.
