Shailesh Kumar, a dynamic para jumper from Bihar, will be keen to make his mark at the Paris 2024 Paralympics in the T63 high jump event. In the T63 classification, athletes with a single leg above-the-knee amputation compete with a prosthesis. Kumar, born on August 8, 2000, hails from the small village of Islamnagar in Bihar's Jamui district.

Growing up in a humble household with his parents, Pratima Devi and Shivnandan Yadav, and two brothers, Shailesh found solace and purpose in sports. From a young age, Shailesh faced significant challenges due to his disability, often feeling marginalized within his community.

However, his indomitable spirit and unwavering determination led him to pursue athletics, where he would eventually rise to prominence as a para-jumper representing India on the global stage. Despite the odds, he graduated with a degree in mathematics, balancing his academic pursuits with his passion for athletics.


A deeper look at Shailesh Kumar's achievements ahead of Paris 2024 Paralympics

Shailesh Kumar's rise in the world of para-athletics has been marked by several significant milestones, including winning the National Championship in Bhubaneswar in March 2022, and securing top honors in the high jump.

In October 2023, he made headlines at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China, by winning the gold medal in the men's T63 high jump event. His exceptional leap of 1.82 meters secured him the top spot on the podium. He also shattered a longstanding record set nine years ago by Paralympic medalist Sharad Kumar.

Earlier in July 2023, Shailesh showcased his talent on the world stage by winning a silver medal at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris. The achievement further solidified his position as one of India's leading para athletes. Looking ahead, Shailesh Kumar has set his sights on the 2024 Summer Olympics, having already qualified to represent India.
