Missouri Tigers History

The Missouri Tigers football program has woven a dynamic tapestry through the annals of collegiate football history. Originating as independents in 1890, they embarked on a journey through different conference affiliations. From the Western Interstate University Football Association in the late 19th century to their stints as independents and their tenure in the Big Eight Conference (1907–1995), later known as the Big Six, Big Seven, and Big Eight, the Tigers evolved. The transition to the Big 12 Conference in 1996 marked another chapter, preceding their current residency in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) since 2012. This intricate history reflects the Tigers' adaptability and resilience in the ever-evolving landscape of college football.

Missouri Tigers Coach

Eliah Drinkwitz took the reins of the Missouri Tigers football program in 2020, bringing a fresh perspective and a reputation for offensive innovation. Known for his strategic acumen and dynamic coaching style, Drinkwitz has swiftly made his mark on the team. Under his leadership, the Tigers continue to evolve, blending a potent mix of skill, discipline, and a commitment to success on and off the field.

Missouri Tigers Stadium: Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium

Missouri Tigers' home turf, Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium, stands as a revered outdoor sports arena in Columbia, Missouri. Renowned for its football legacy, the stadium is the third-largest sports facility in the state, hosting the fervent support of Mizzou fans. Named Faurot Field in 1972 to honor Coach Don Faurot, the venue transcends football seasons, transforming into a soccer battleground during the offseason. Its horseshoe-shaped design, with added seating in the open end zone, creates an immersive atmosphere. Beyond football, Faurot Field has hosted high school championships and, until 2012, the annual "Providence Bowl" between local high schools.

Missouri Tigers Rivals

The Missouri Tigers have forged intense rivalries that span historical matchups and new traditions. The Battle Line Rivalry with Arkansas, inaugurated in 1906, gained new significance as a permanent cross-division clash since 2014. Marked by the unveiling of a rivalry trophy in 2015, the Tigers currently lead the series 10-4, showcasing their dominance in this SEC showdown.

The historic Border War with Kansas, one of the longest-lasting rivalries dating back to the 1850s, is set to reignite in 2025. This rivalry, enriched by the teams' annual clashes until Missouri's move to the SEC in 2011, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of competition.

Another notable rivalry is with Illinois, emphasizing the strong basketball ties between the schools. Though not an annual fixture, the series will be rekindled in 2026 for a four-year period, adding a new chapter to this regional competition.

The Mayor's Cup clash with South Carolina, born from both schools' locations in cities named Columbia, has been a lively SEC East rivalry since Missouri joined in 2012. With a 9-5 lead in favor of the Tigers, this matchup celebrates the vibrancy of the SEC.

While historic rivalries like Iowa State, Oklahoma, and Nebraska hold a place in Missouri's storied past, the Tigers continue to define new narratives, ensuring that each game against a rival is a chapter etched in the rich tapestry of college football history.
