Rafael Nadal will be returning to action in Acapulco

Rafael Nadal will be making his first appearance since his Australian Open final defeat when the Mexican Open gets underway in Acapulco, Mexico this week. The top seed is a two-time champion at this ATP 500 hardcourt tournament and even made it to the final in 2017.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion will be looking to build on the confidence-boosting start he made to the new season and a third trophy in Acapulco would be the best reward. The Spaniard faces the serve-and-volley specialist Mischa Zverev as he begins his quest for the title.

Rafa's path is not without danger, though, for he could come up against the resurgent Stan Wawrinka as early as the quarter-finals after a likely meeting with the dangerous Nick Kyrgios. Wawrinka made it to the final in Rotterdam this month and the signs are very much there that he is on his way back to the top echelons of the sport.

Mischa's younger brother, Alexander Zverev is the second seed at this tournament and he begins his campaign against Australian qualifier Alexei Popyrin. The German star failed to back up his World Tour Finals win at the Australian Open as he crashed out in the Round of 16 and this will be his chance at redemption.

John Isner, the third seed, reached a couple ATP 250 semi-finals in the past two weeks and would be hoping to bring that form to this tournament as well.

Diego Schwartzman suffered a defeat in his opening round match at Rio right after reaching the final in Buenos Aires. As the fourth seed in Acapulco, he will hope to erase the memories of that shock loss and focus on getting back on track although it will be interesting to see how well he manages the transition from clay to hardcourts.
