3 shocking results from Day 7 at US Open 2024 ft. Coco Gauff biting the dust

The seventh day of the 2024 US Open on Sunday, September 1, saw the first set of four players making it to the quarterfinals of the respective women's and men's singles draws. The remaining halves of the quarterfinal brackets will be decided on the eighth day on Monday.

In the women's singles, (2) Aryna Sabalenka, (13) Emma Navarro, (7) Zheng Qinwen, and Paula Badosa prevailed in their Round of 16 matches. The men's competition saw (4) Alexander Zverev, (9) Grigor Dimitrov, (12) Taylor Fritz, and (20) Frances Tiafoe earning spots in the last eight.

The New York Major witnessed upsets of epic proportions before Sunday, with the likes of defending champion (2) Novak Djokovic and (3) Carlos Alcaraz crashing out. The seventh day also produced unexpected outcomes as seeded contenders clashed.

Here are three shocking results from day seven of the US Open:

#3 Casper Ruud

(8) Casper Ruud's Grand Slam involvements for the 2024 season concluded on Sunday when he lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 to (12) Taylor Fritz in the fourth round of the US Open.

Ruud came into the match holding a 2-0 lead in the head-to-head and started by winning the first set. However, Fritz stepped up after the opener and converted four break points, at the same time not allowing the Norwegian a single break of his own, to claim the win.

Ruud has enjoyed a more successful season than Fritz. He won titles in Barcelona (ATP 500) and Geneva (ATP 250), and reached the finals in Monte-Carlo (ATP 1000), Acapulco (ATP 500), and Los Cabos (ATP 250).

On the other hand, Fritz collected two ATP 250 trophies, in Eastbourne and Delray Beach, and reached the summit clash in Munich.

#2 Andrey Rublev

(6) Andrey Rublev looked in fine form during the preparatory North American hardcourt swing before the US Open began as he played the final in Montreal and reached the quarterfinals in Washington and Cincinnati.

(9) Grigor Dimitrov had other plans for the fourth round as he pushed Rublev to the edge by taking the first couple of sets. The Russian replied in kind by winning the third and fourth to force a decider.

But Dimitrov hung tough in the fifth set to close the match 6-3, 7-6(3), 1-6, 3-6, 6-3 in his favor after three hours and 40 minutes of action.

Rublev produced better numbers across the match, hitting 21 aces and converting five break points against Dimitrov's 17 and three, but the Bulgarian stepped up in the clutch moments to advance.

# 1 Coco Gauff

The highlight of Day 7 at the 2024 US Open was defending champion (3) Coco Gauff biting the dust against (13) Emma Navarro in the fourth round.

Facing fellow American Navarro for the second time in two months, Gauff messed up big time with her serve, producing a staggering 60 unforced errors, including 19 double faults to lose the match 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

The result meant World No. 3 Gauff lost a staggering 1,760 ranking points from her title-winning performance at the US Open in 2023 and is now the World No. 6 in live rankings.
