As the final Grand Slam of the year kicks off at Flushing Meadows, four Indian players are set to make their mark at the US Open 2024. With a mix of seasoned veterans and promising young talents, the tournament is set to be a captivating display of Indian tennis.
Sumit Nagal, the sole Indian representative in the men's singles draw, is poised to etch his name in history with his fourth Grand Slam appearance of the year. Meanwhile, in the men's doubles draw, Rohan Bopanna, Yuki Bhambri, and N. Sriram Balaji will all be eager to make their mark. Let us take a look at the Indian tennis players taking part in the US Open 2024.
Sumit Nagal – Men’s Singles and Doubles
Sumit Nagal, India’s sole representative in the men’s singles at US Open 2024, is set to make his fourth Grand Slam appearance this year, a feat no Indian male player has achieved in singles since 2019.
Currently ranked 73rd, Nagal will face Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands, ranked 40th, in the opening round. Nagal, who made his Grand Slam debut at the US Open five years ago, will be eager to make good use of his experience. Ngal and Griekspoor's previous encounters create a compelling backdrop for their upcoming match.
In addition to his singles campaign, Nagal will also compete in the men’s doubles, teaming up with Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka. This year's edition of the US Open will be Nagal’s second Grand Slam doubles appearance, following a first-round exit at Wimbledon 2024.
Rohan Bopanna – Men’s Doubles
Veteran Rohan Bopanna, making his 16th appearance at the US Open, will partner with Matthew Ebden of Australia. The duo, who were runners-up last year, are seeded second this year.
Bopanna, with a career nearing 900 ATP matches, and Ebden, who together won the Australian Open and Miami Masters 1000 earlier this year, will aim to rediscover their winning form and secure another Grand Slam title.
Yuki Bhambri – Men’s Doubles
Yuki Bhambri, partnering with Albano Olivetti, will also compete in the men's doubles draw. The pair have enjoyed a successful season, capturing two ATP 250 titles at the Swiss Open and Bavarian Championships. Bhambri, seeking his 50th career doubles victory, will be determined to improve upon his early exit from last year's US Open.
N. Sriram Balaji – Men’s Doubles
N. Sriram Balaji, making his US Open doubles debut, will partner with Guido Andreozzi of Argentina. Balaji, ranked 66th in doubles, has had a commendable year, reaching the third round of the French Open. This new partnership offers Balaji a fresh chance to excel, and fans are eager to witness how he and Andreozzi perform in their first Grand Slam outing together.
