Anna Kalinskaya defeated former World No.1 Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-1 in the semifinal in Berlin in June this year. This victory came before she lifted the runner-up trophy after losing to Jessica Pegula in the finals.
While the WTA World No. 13 won her match against Azarenka, Sinner defeated Zhang Zhizhen to progress into the Halle final at the same time. During her post-match interview, an interviewer asked Kalinskaya about the same (via Tennis World USA):
“Jannik is in the final of Halle. You’re in the final of Berlin. What is it with you?"
Responding to the question, the Russian said:
“I’m just trying to be a little bit as good as him (laughing). I’m gonna text him now. I’m so happy.”
