5 Roger Federer achievements you did not know about ft. most match wins on grass

Roger Federer is one of the greatest men's tennis players of all time. In a career spanning a little more than two decades, he won 20 Grand Slam titles and spent 310 weeks as the world No. 1. While Novak Djokovic has since surpassed both of those achievements, the Swiss maestro's status as one of the all-time greats of the game has remained unchanged.

A few of Federer's achievements might be unknown to the casual tennis fan. In this article, we will talk about five such achievements, including his impressive record on grass court.

On that note, let us get on with the list:

#5. Winning five Laureus Sportsman of the Year awards:

Roger Federer holds this record jointly alongside Novak Djokovic. The Swiss won the award for four consecutive years from 2005 to 2008. He won it again in 2018 after winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2017 and then defending his Australian Open title the following year.

He also won the Laureus Comeback of the Year award in 2018, taking his tally to six Laureus awards in total, a record that will take some beating.

#4. Winning most matches in a row on grass (65):

Aside from the legendary Pete Sampras, Federer is arguably the greatest grass-court player of all time. He has won eight Wimbledon titles, five of them were in a row. His winning streak on grass court started at the Halle Open in 2003 and ended at Wimbledon in 2008, where Federer lost to Rafael Nadal in the final.

After Sampras' retirement in 2003, Federer was virtually unchallenged on grass until Nadal rose to the fore and made the most of the opportunity.

#3. Reaching all Grand Slam finals in three separate years:

Federer is the only male player to have reached all Grand Slam finals in three separate years: 2006, 2007 and 2009. It was during a period when the Swiss was in his absolute prime, as he won 12 Grand Slam titles from 2003 to 2007.

While Novak Djokovic managed to reach the finals of all four Grand Slams in 2015, the Serb has not managed to equal Federer’s record till now.

#2. Winning the highest number of matches at the ATP Finals (59):

Federer has won the title on six occasions, which was a record later broken by Novak Djokovic, who won seven titles in the tournament. However, Federer still holds the record of winning most matches in the tournament.

On the 17 occasions he has participated in the tournament, Federer has won 59 matches and holds a win-loss record of 59-17. With a win percentage of almost 78%, the Swiss's record will take some exemplary performances to break.

#1. Federer winning the most matches on grass (192):

As mentioned earlier, Federer is among the greatest ever players on grass. He holds the record for most wins on grass, with 192 wins on the surface. He has a win-loss record of 192-29, which gives him a winning ratio of 87%, and is ahead of Djokovic, Andy Murray, and the legendary Pete Sampras.

Sampras has a 101-20 win-loss record on grass, giving him a winning ratio of almost 84%. Given the apparent reluctance among the current crop of players to play on grass, some fans have argued that Federer’s record on grass courts might stand forever.
