5 times Martina Navratilova took a swing at former US President Donald Trump
Martina Navratilova is arguably the greatest female tennis player in the Open Era and is the most successful one by a mile. The now 67-year-old Czech-American athlete has amassed a mind-boggling 167 singles titles, 177 doubles titles, and 15 mixed doubles titles across her 32-year career, which began in 1974 and ended in 2006.
She is one of three athletes to have achieved a career Grand Slam in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles, famously known as the career "Boxed Set". In her singles, doubles, and mixed doubles exploits, Navratilova has 59 Major trophies to her name.
Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia (now Czechia), Navratilova obtained American citizenship in 1981 when she was stripped of her Czech nationality, which she later reacquired in 2008.
The Czech-American is a Democrat who has donated more than $25,000 to Democratic campaigns and has often clashed heads with Republicans, firing shots at former US president Donald Trump online on multiple occasions. Here are five instances when Navratilova hit out at the former American president:
#1 "Yikes...Meltdown alert!!!"
Martina Navratilova, a staunch critic of the Republican party and Donald Trump over the years, called Trump out on social media following his rant against President Joe Biden and the 2020 election.
Trump posted about allegations of election fraud on December 25, 2023, on Truth Social, a platform he launched following his censorship on all mainstream social media platforms. An X (formerly Twitter) user subsequently shared a screenshot of the post.
"Trump is currently having an ALL CAPS meltdown over on Truth Social on Christmas Day. Very stable genius," they wrote.
Navratilova reposted the tweet, mocking Trump for his antics, saying:
"Yikes...Meltdown alert!!!"
#4 "Imagine just how guilty you have to be to be unanimously found guilty by 12 people on all counts despite the fact that you are a former president!!!"
On May 31, 2024, Navratilova reacted to Trump unanimously being found guilty on all 34 counts in the infamous hush money case.
Reacting to the news, she took to X, formerly Twitter, saying:
"GUILTY, GUILTY,GUILTY, Bye Felicia!!!!" Navratilova wrote.
"GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS!!!! THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN! donald trump is now officially a CRIMINAL FELON!!!!!!!!! #karmahasspoken."
The Czech-American also hailed the American justice system as she pondered the degree of his crimes to be found guilty by all 12 jurors.
"Imagine just how guilty you have to be to be unanimously found guilty by 12 people on all counts despite the fact that you are a former president!!! Really proud of our justice system for a change. Well done!"
#3 "For he's a jolly good felon"
Continuing her elation at Trump being found guilty in the hush money case, Navratilova humored herself about waking up and singing about the former president being a felon.
The hush money case was about an attempt by Donald Trump to pay adult film actor Stormy Daniels to seemingly buy her silence. Trump was alleged to have paid her $130,000 before the 2016 Presidential elections to stay quiet about a one-night stand.
The money was recorded as a legal expense, and he was accused of 34 counts of falsifying business records.
"I woke up this morning singing to myself For he’s a jolly good felon, he’s a jolly good felon he’s a jolly good feloooon, which nobody can deny etc etc," she wrote.
#4 "The utter disrespect from this guy deserves nothing but utter contempt for him"
Navratilova criticized Donald Trump for his actions in the presidential debate on June 27 and his criticism of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
She called the former president out for disrespecting his opponents on X (formerly Twitter):
"The utter disrespect from this guy deserves nothing but utter contempt for him- that right there shows you he doesn’t give a cr*p about America- it’s all about him."
#5 "The empathy gene is totally missing in Trump - which is what makes him a psychopath"
The 18-time Grand Slam champion criticized Trump following the death of firefighter Corey Comperatore, who lost his life amidst the failed assassination attempt on Trump.
Corey's wife, Helen, mentioned that Trump did not contact her to express his condolences following her husband's unfortunate demise. The tennis legend called the former president "a psychopath" and someone who lacked the ability to empathize.
"The empathy gene is totally missing in trump- which is what makes him a psychopath," Martina Navratilova posted on X.
