Aegon Championships: Andy Murray overcomes Gilles Muller for a place in the semifinals
Top seed Andy Murray beat Gilles Muller 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 to reach the semifinals of the Aegon Championships.
Muller was the first to take advantage after breaking Murray’s serve for a 3-1 lead. He was put under tremendous pressure in the next game, but held onto his lead before closing out the set in 32 minutes.
There were no break point chances for either player as the second set went to a tie break. Murray hit a forehand passing shot and attacked Muller’s second serve to go a double break up in the breaker. He won the tie breaker dropping just two points forcing a decider.
Muller struggled on his first serves early on in the third set putting in just 30% of them. He saved six break points, but a brilliant forehand down the line winner from Murray earned him a decisive break.
Murray read Muller’s serve better in the last two sets and his 13 aces for the match helped him get over the line.
"I started to read the serve a bit better at the end of the tie-break and that was when the match changed," Murray said.
"It's always tough when you're behind and I wasn't getting many chances, but at the end I started to return better and relaxed a bit more, and I played some good tennis.
"Hopefully I can take that form into the semi-finals."
Talking of semifinals, Murray will face Viktor Troicki in the last four. The Serb took out John Isner 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the quarterfinal.
