Andy Murray and David Beckham snubbed for New Year’s honours

The Wimbledon Champion and English footballing legend David Beckham have been overlooked in the New Year’s honour’s list.

Andy Murray, 26, had become the first British international to win the prestigious Wimbledon championship after 77 years and former England football captain retired from football in May after a 20-year career. Both of them have been previously made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.

Former Football Association chairman David Bernstein and 1969 women’s Wimbledon champion Ann Jones were made a commander of the Order of the British Empire. David Bedford, a former 10,000-metre world record holder who is presently the race director for the London Marathon, was awarded an OBE for his services towards athletics and charitable fundraising.

As per BBC Sport, Prime Minister David Cameron commented on Murray’s victory at Wimbledon: “I can’t think of anyone who deserves one more.”

The people are nominated because of their achievements and the type of honour given to them is decided by a committee. The committee’s decision goes to the prime minister and then to the Queen.
