Andy Murray battles through to Round 2 of U.S Open 2014

Andy Murray

World number nine Andy Murray had his first test on day one of the US Open in the form of Robin Haase of the Netherlands. The Scot survived throughout the match, battling with his shoulder and thigh muscles more than his opponent. He finally came around to defeat Haase in four sets- 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), 1-6, 7-5 in 188 minutes.

Murray came into the Grand Slam after getting rid of his injury problems but his injuries returned to haunt him during this first round encounter. His shoulder began to trouble him towards the end of the second set. The injury became a bit more serious as the game progressed, resulting in Murray losing the third set 1-6.

Along with his shoulder, his thighs also began to cramp up in the fourth set. At one point it looked like Murray might let the match slip away, but he showed immense resistance and he battled through with the injuries to grab victory.

Haase had 61 winners in comparison to Murray's 47. Haase also won a total of 146 points, one more than Murray. Inspite of this, Murray was able to overcome this first round scare and move on to the second round. Now the question arises - Will he be able to continue and fight for the US Open title or will his injuries get the better of him?
