Andy Murray beats Novak Djokovic to win Canadian Open
World No. 2 Andy Murray rode on his blazing form to beat his rival, top seed Novak Djokovic 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in a scintillating final that lasted 3 hours at the finals of the Rogers Cup in Montreal, Canada.
This is Murray's third Rogers Cup trophy, and his second ATP Masters 1000 title win this year. The Scot also ended his losing streak of 8 straight matches against Djokovic, posting his first win against the Serbian in 771 days. Murray last beat Djokovic at the Wimbledon 2013 finals.
The Scot put on a scintillating display, playing backhands with brute force as opponent Djokovic stayed behind the baseline absorbing the pace. Both players returned first serves brilliantly, frequently attacking the second serves.
The two top seeds locked horns in epic baseline battles in the first set, as Murray finally took the decisive break to take the set 6-4 in over an hour. In the second set, however, Djokovic broke Murray early and consolidated the lead, taking the second set 6-4 and forcing the decider.
Murray took and built upon the early break from Djokovic. However, the decisive moment came in the final set as Murray saved 4 break points in his service game, which saw 10 deuces and lasted over 15 minutes.
As both players continued to hold serve, the Serbian World No. 1 faced pressure in his service game as he trailed 2-5, fending off 3 match points, looking to deny the Scot the match right there. Djokovic then put pressure on the Murray serve to the championship where he had 2 break points.
In the end, Murray came out on top saving his break points and sealing victory.
The World No. 1 and World No. 2 will play the Cincinnati Masters in the United States next. Both have a first-round bye at the tournament.
