Former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev will take on Taylor Fritz in the first match of the group stage at the ATP Finals 2024.

Medvedev started the season with his third appearance in the final of the Australian Open. He came up short yet again and blew a two-set lead this time against Jannik Sinner in the final. His title defense in Dubai concluded in the semifinals with a loss to Ugo Humbert.

Medvedev advanced to his second final of the season at the Indian Wells Masters and went down to Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets. Sinner then knocked him out in the semifinals of the Miami Open. The clay swing was quite decent for him, with a quarterfinal at the Madrid Open, along with fourth-round appearances at the Italian Open and the French Open.

The Russian's journey at Wimbledon came to an end at the hands of Alcaraz in the semifinals. While he resumed the hardcourt swing on a disappointing note with back-to-back losses, he still made the quarterfinals of the US Open. He then reached the semifinals of the China Open, the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters, and crashed out in the second round of the Paris Masters.

Following a quarterfinal finish at the Australian Open, Fritz defended his title at the Delray Beach Open. A fourth-round showing at the Indian Wells Masters was his best result for the remainder of the hardcourt swing. He enjoyed the best clay season of his career and reached his first final on the surface in Munich, and lost to Jan-Lennard Struff.

Fritz also advanced to the semifinals of the Madrid Open, the quarterfinals of the Italian Open, and the fourth round of the French Open. He won his second title of the year at the Eastbourne International and made the last eight at Wimbledon. He bagged the bronze medal with Tommy Paul in the men's doubles at the Paris Olympics.

Fritz tasted his biggest success of the season at the US Open, where he progressed to his maiden Major final, and was beaten by Sinner. Since then he has reached the semifinals of the Shanghai Masters and bowed out of the Japan Open and the Paris Masters without winning a match.

Despite a pretty good 45-19 record, this has been the worst season of Medvedev's career thus far since he hit the big leagues. He hoisted the winner's trophy five times last year and has failed to do so even once this season. If he fails to win the ATP Finals, then this would be the first time since 2017 that he would end the season without a title.

Fritz took his career to the next level with his trip to the US Open final and has amassed a 49-21 record for the season. He has made the cut for the ATP Finals for the second time in his career. He also has a 7-8 record against his fellow top 10 players this year.

Medvedev, meanwhile, has a 5-7 record against top 10 opposition and has lost his last four matches against them. Both players failed to win their openers at the Paris Masters but Fritz has put up more of a fight against top players, which could help him one-up the Russian here as well.

Pick: Taylor Fritz to win in three sets.
