Roger Federer survived a first set scare and beat Tomas Berdych 7-6(1), 6-3, 6-4. The Swiss great did not have a good start, losing his first service game and going down 3-0. Federer seemed to be playing at a lower level than one expected and initially, it appeared as if Federer would lose the set.

Federer tightened his service game and started plugging away at the Berdych serve. Berdych won only six more points on Federer's next six service games. Berdych had a set point at 5-3; however, Federer saved it and then reclaimed the break. Federer saved one more set point in the 12th game to force a tie-break.

Federer's levels were steadily increasing and he won the tie break convincingly 7-1. After that, Berdych deflated and could not produce the same intensity as in the first set while Federer produced a masterclass. Federer stayed in control and won the next two sets allowing only a single break of serve. Federer has never been beaten at the quarter-final stage and reached his 14th Australian Open semi-final.
