Holger Rune vs David Goffin preview
Fourth seed Holger Rune will face a resurgent David Goffin in a highly anticipated quarterfinal clash at the 2024 Swiss Indoors on Friday, October 25.
Rune entered Basel following a third-round loss to Taylor Fritz at the Shanghai Masters. He opened his campaign this week with a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over Nicolas Jarry in the first round before overcoming another stern test in the second round, defeating Dominic Stricker 6-3, 7-6 (2).
The 33-year-old Goffin, meanwhile, has shown excellent form since Wimbledon, starting with a semifinal run in Winston-Salem, then a third-round finish at the US Open, followed by a quarterfinal appearance in Shanghai.
This week in Basel, Goffin fought through qualifying, defeating Yannick Hanfmann and Botic van de Zandschulp. In the main draw, he battled back from a set down in both his matches against Matteo Arnaldi and Ugo Humbert to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.

Holger Rune vs David Goffin prediction
Holger Rune enters his quarterfinal clash against David Goffin with a solid 40-21 match record this season, including a 26-13 record on hard courts. He is yet to secure a title this year, however, with his finals run in Brisbane his best result yet. Rune has been in strong form this week in Basel and looks poised to make a deep run if he maintains this level. Known for his success indoors, Rune is expected to make it at least to the finals with a rather easy draw left around him.
David Goffin, meanwhile, has been playing some of his best tennis in recent months. His journey this week, however, has been demanding, with three of his four matches going the distance. While it has not been easy, he has demonstrated resilience and mental strength, qualities that have helped him secure a berth in the quarterfinals.
On paper, Rune appears the stronger contender, boasting a superior season record and a smoother path to this stage. Goffin, however, has put up excellent results of late with his recent upsets against top-20 players, proving he can rise to the occasion despite his age.
While this matchup promises a close contest given both players’ performances, Rune is favored to advance if he maintains his current performance level. Fatigue could also play a big part in this contest with Rune having spent almost half as much time on court as Rune has done this week.
Pick: Rune in straight sets.
