Bianca Andreescu is the player to watch out for this season
Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu surprised the world by winning the Indian Wells title at the age of 18, last week. Yesterday, she outlasted Angelique Kerber in the third round of Miami Open and reached the Round of 16, extending her winning streak to 10 matches.
The Canadian teenager started the year as World number 152. She won the first WTA title of her career in California, becoming the first wildcard to lift the trophy in Indian Wells history. Andreescu defeated Angelique Kerber in the finals and the result also vaulted her ranking to number 24. The Candian is the latest inferno on the WTA tour.
Let's take a look at her career so far.
A few might know that Bianca has a career-high junior ranking of number 3. She won the 2017 Australian Open and French Open junior doubles title pairing with Carson Branstine. Andreescuhe also made her senior Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon 2017, where she was defeated in the first round after qualifying for the main draw.
Andreescu secured her first win on the WTA tour at Citi Open in 2017. The Canadian was awarded a wildcard entry into the main draw of the tournament and defeated Camila Giorgi in the first round before beating Kristina Mladenovic, thereby marking her first victory over a Top-20 player.
In 2018, the 18-year-old failed to make it to a single WTA event, but she won two ITF level tournaments out of four finals.
This season has been the breakthrough season for Andreescu. She overcame Eugenie Bouchard as Canada's number 1 ranked player and started the year by reaching the finals of ASB Classic in New Zealand. Abdreescu came through the qualifying rounds at the Australian Open 2019 and reached the second round in Melbourne, marking her best result at a major event.
Bianca won the Oracle challenger series at Newport Beach by defeating compatriot Eugenie Bouchard in the finals. The teenager also reached the semi-finals of the Mexican Open.
Andreescu's run at the Indian Wells is her best performance till date. She defeated some of the toughest opponents in her way to conquering her first WTA title. Bianca continued to impress the tennis pundits and fans in Miami and is one of the contenders to reach the last stages in the state of Florida. Her next match up is against Anett Kontaveit.
The Canadian has seen her stock rise rapidly, courtesy of her mercurial displays on the court. The 18-year-old has been improving day by day and will be a tough opponent to beat. She plays fearlessly with strong baseline strokes which heavy enough for her opponents. Andreescu will certainly aim to enter the Top-10 in WTA rankings but the next-gen player will have to play consistently to get continuous success on tour.
