Genie Bouchard makes a snarky remark after beating Serena Williams

Eugenie Bouchard shakes hands with Serena Williams after defeating 6-2 6-1 in the Hopman Cup on Tuesday

After defeating World No. 1 Serena Williams 6-2 6-1 in the Hopman Cup on Tuesday, Eugenie Bouchard took a friendly jibe at her opponent, saying that maybe a little bit of coffee might have helped her play much better than the way she did.

In her previous match against Flavio Pennetta on Monday, the 33-year-old was 6-0 down in the first set and asked the referee if she could get some coffee and the officials fulfilled her request by providing her with a cup of espresso. The coffee seemed to have charged Serena up as she won the next two sets and the match 0-6 6-3 6-0.

“Maybe she needed another coffee,” Bouchard said after defeating the 18-time Grand Slam champion.

The 20-year-old Canadian also admitted that Williams probably didn't bring her ‘A’ game to the court but added that the win has certainly helped boost her confidence.

“I know she didn't play her best. I'm happy I just stayed with it and held my nerve. It's a good way to start the year — gives me some confidence."

Serena complained that she felt a bit tired and conceded that she can play a lot better than what she did against Bouchard.

"It's weird. I can't get my body to move. I feel like I've got no energy. It's a little frustrating because I know I can play 2,000 times better.

"I've just got to get my feet moving. I have to figure it out," Williams said.
