Alexander Zverev vs Holger Rune preview

Second seed Alexander Zverev of Germany will face 13th Holger Rune of Denmark in the third round of the National Bank Open 2024 on Thursday, August 8, in Montreal, Canada.

Zverev is one of the most consistent players on the ATP Tour so far in 2024, regularly making deep runs into the tournaments he plays in. He has won the Italian Open this year and reached the finals of French Open and German Open. The 27-year-old German thrashed Jordan Thompson of Australia 6-1 6-1 in the second round of the Canadian Open after having received a bye in the first round.

On the other hand, Rune has seen a drop in his ranking this year following a string of inconsistent performances. However, he has done well in his first two matches in Montreal this year. The Dane beat Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2 3-6 6-2 before securing a comprehensive 6-1, 6-3 win over Pablo Carreno Busta to move into the third round.

Alexander Zverev vs Holger Rune prediction

As mentioned already, Zverev has been one of the most consistent players on the ATP Tour in 2024. The German has a big serve and a very powerful backhand and has also improved his forehand a good deal in the recent past.

He also moves pretty well on the court for a man of his size and Rune should find it really difficult to put it past him in their third-round clash. With Rune also having a good backhand, one can expect to see a lot of crosscourt backhand exchanges in the match.

However, Rune should not find it easy to break the German, given the latter's ability to serve big. It might be a close match, but it is difficult to look beyond Zverev as the eventual winner in the match considering the form of both players at the moment.

Pick: Zverev to win in three sets.
