Americans Amanda Anisimova and Caroline Dolehide will clash in the first round of the Canadian Open 2024 on Tuesday (August 6).
Anisimova returned from an eight-month break at the ASB Classic in Auckland at the start of the season, and made the second round. She reached the fourth round of the Australian Open after that, losing to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets.
Anisimova didn't compete for the next couple of months and returned during the clay swing, which didn't go as per plans. She reached the second round of the Charleston Open and the French Open, and bowed out in the first round elsewhere.
More misery was in store for the American during the grass season, during which she failed to make it past the qualifying rounds of the Libema Open and Wimbledon. Anisimova participated in last week's Citi Open following her exit from the grasscourt Major, and made the last eight as a qualifier, going down to Dolehide.
Meanwhile, the start of the season was quite rough for Dolehide as she went 2-6 until the end of February. She won back-to-back matches for the first time at Indian Wells, where she reached the third round. She wouldn't do the same until the Madrid Open, where she once again progressed to the third round.
Dolehide fell in the first round of her next three tournaments, including the French Open. She bowed out of Wimbledon in the first round as well. She advanced to the semifinals of the Citi Open last week, and was eliminated by eventual champion Paula Badosa.

Anisimova's comeback started on a strong note but she went off track after her Australian Open run. Dolehide has weathered a few ups and downs as well throughout the season.
Both players caught fire in Washington last week and ultimately locked horns in the quarterfinals. The first set was quite competitive but Dolehide ran away with the match after that. Anisimova struggled with the humidity and found it tough to keep up in the second set.
Dolehide is the one to have reached a WTA 1000 final in this match-up, achieving the feat at last year's Guadalajara Open. Anisimova's other accomplishments in singles do overshadow her compatriot's. If she is able to channel her best once again, then she will be favored to come out on top in this encounter, despite what transpired a week ago.
