Casper Ruud vs James Duckworth preview
Sixth-seeded Norwegian Casper Ruud will take on Australian lucky loser, James Duckworth, in the second round of the 2024 Canadian Open. Ruud was last seen in action at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he lost in the quarter-finals against Felix Auger-Aliassime.
The former World No. 2 has a 43-13 record in 2024, with two title wins at the Barcelona Open and the Geneva Open on the clay. On the hard courts, Ruud's best performance came when he made successive ATP finals at the Los Cabos Open and the Acapulco Open. The current World No. 9 also reached the quarter-final of the BNP Paribas Open. Due to his high seeding, Ruud got a bye in the opening round of the Canadian Open.
James Duckworth has had a poor season in 2024 with a 9-8 record. The Australian has struggled to make any decent runs at ATP events, with reaching the quarter-final at the Stuttgart Open being his best result. He got an entry at the Canadian Open as a replacement to Cameron Norrie.
Duckworth lost his final qualifying round against Mackenzie McDonald. However, once he got an entry to the main draw as a lucky loser, he faced off against Marcos Giron of the USA. The Australian secured a dominant 6-4, 6-1 win over the American to advance to the next round.

Casper Ruud vs James Duckworth prediction
Ruud has been in great form in 2024, reaching five finals in the year, two of which were on hard courts. At the Canadian Open, the Norwegian has a 67 percent win ratio, with a semi-final appearance in 2022 being his best result, in which he lost against Hubert Hurkacz.
Duckworth, on the other hand, has struggled to keep his wins over par with his losses in 2024. The Australian has not shown any good form, especially on hard courts. Returning serve has been a major issue for Duckworth on hard courts, as he has won only 10 percent of the return games in the year.
Being a top player, and one of the most in-form players of 2024, Ruud is an undisputed favorite going into this match.
